ABOUT MITSKI

Born Mitsuki Laycock on September 27, 1990 in Japan to an American father and a Japanese mother, Mitski Miyawaki (known simply as ‘Mitski’) is an indie-rock singer-songwriter. Due to her father’s work, she spent many years of her early life living in different countries, including Turkey, China, Malaysia, Japan, the Czech Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, before her family settled in the United States. Writing her first song at 18, having just completed her diploma I Turkey, she moved to New York City for college and decided to pursue music, having initially intended to study film.

CAREER

2012-2015: Lush; Retired from Sad, New Career in Business; and Bury Me at Makeout Creek

After transferring from Hunter College to Purchase College's Conservatory of Music, where she studied studio composition, Mitski recorded her first two albums as her second and third-year projects, respectively. Lush (2012) and Retired from Sad, New Career in Business (2013) are both piano-based albums that have been praised for their ‘poetic lyricism’ and ‘impeccable composition’.

Upon graduating, she began performing as the vocalist for the prog-metal band Voice Coils, although the group was short-lived. Bury Me at Makeout Creek, Mitski’s third album, was released in November 2014 via Double Double Whammy. Unlike Retired from Sad, New career in Business which employed a 60-piece orchestra, Bury Me… was stripped back and raw, recorded in friends’ home studios. It received critical acclaim from Pitchfork, Consequence of Sound, and Rolling Stone.

2015-2017: Puberty 2

In December 2015, Mitski signed with Dead Oceans. She released her fourth studio album, Puberty 2, on the label in July 2016, preceded by the lead single "Your Best American Girl" and second single, "Happy". The album was lauded by critics and appeared on 10 ‘Best Albums’ lists that year.  "Your Best American Girl" was named the 13th best song of the 2010s by Rolling Stone. Mitski’s song "Francis Forever" was covered by Olivia Olson as the character Marceline the Vampire Queen in a 2016 episode of the cartoon Adventure Time.

In 2017, Mitski toured as support for Pixies and for Lorde’s Melodrama World Tour. She also appeared on the compilation albums Our First 100 Days and 7-Inches For Planned Parenthood. That November, she starred in the short film Sitting.

2018-present: Be the Cowboy

In April 2018, "Between the Breaths" – a collaboration with experimental band Xiu Xiu – appeared on the soundtrack of the sci-fi comedy film How to Talk to Girls at Parties.

The following month, with no announcement, Mitski made her fifth studio album, Be the Cowboy, available to pre-order. "Geyser", the album’s lead single was released on the same day (May 18) alongside an accompanying music video. It was followed by "Nobody" on June 26 and "Two Slow Dancers" on August 9. Dead Oceans released Be the Cowboy on August 15, 2018 and it was named as the album of the year by Pitchfork, Vulture, and Consequence of Sound, among others.

During Mitski’s 2019 tour, she began utilizing choreography in her performances, inspired by the Japanese post-war dance theatre Butoh.

"Cop Car", a previously unreleased track, was released in January 2020 on the soundtrack for the supernatural horror film The Turning. The following month, Mitski featured on Allie X’s song "Susie Save Your Love" from her album Cape God.

It was announced in October 2020 that Mitski would provide the soundtrack to Chris Miskiewicz and Vincent Kings’ graphic novel This Is Where We Fall. The album was released on cassette with the standard hardcover novel on May 5, 2021.

"Working for the Knife" – her first single since Be the Cowboy – was released on October 5, 2021.
